In an article about Finding Money for College where three girls share how they found their scholarships, Skye was featured by saying that she competed for her scholarships. Below is an excerpt from her article!
What she did: Skye saw a friend’s post about Distinguished Young Women (distinguishedyw.org), a national scholarship program, and decided to sign up for it. A key reason? Every year, it offers more than $1 billion in cash or grants (some colleges provide free tuition to DYW girls) – and it costs nothing to take part.
What it entails: “The program requires you to be excellent in academics, public speaking, interview skills, performing-arts talent, and fitness,” Skye says. (You don’t need to be the best at everything.) She adds, “It’s not a beauty pageant.” You can begin at the local or state level as early as your junior year; to be eligible for cash, you need to complete a few workshops (requirements vary by location), where you learn about topics such as resume writing and entrepreneurship. “I got scholarship money just for showing up!” she says. Girls who are successful move on to a national competition.
Her takeaway: Skye, the big winner in 2017, took home more than $36,000. “And I’ve been inducted into a wonderful community of strong women!”
