Reese's Senior Bowl

By Nicole Renard
Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2013
Right when I got home from the Distinguished Young Women of Alabama program in Montgomery, I did a quick turn around to go to a welcome reception that was being hosted at a hotel in downtown Mobile. It was the kickoff to a week’s worth of fun with the Reese’s Senior Bowl! There, I was able to meet a lot of the players from all across the country, most of whom are headed to the NFL! Some of my new friends include, Cody Parkey (Auburn), Jay Prosch (Auburn), Cody Mandell (Alabama), Kevin Norwood (Alabama), Gabe Ikard (Oklahoma), and Dee Ford (Auburn).

The next morning, I appeared on WKRG Take Five’s cooking segment to bake Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Brookies. This is a combination between a brownie and a cookie for when you can’t decide which one you want. This tasty treat is a brownie on the bottom and a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup cookie on the top. YUM! It was great practice for future my cooking show šŸ˜‰ I linked the clip on my Facebook and Twitter if you want to check it out! That same day I filmed a PSA commercial for Distinguished Young Women. When we finished shooting it, the General Manager for WKRG, Mark Bunting, treated us to the most amazing lunch at a local Asian restaurant, Osaka, where we ate an endless amount of food!

On Tuesday, I went to the City Council meeting and a Lions Club luncheon! Later that evening, I was also able to meet up with one of my friends who is an Azalea Trail Maid. I met her during National Finals last year and we have remained friends ever since.

That Wednesday was the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Chick-Fil-A Pep Rally where some of the players and I were able to sit on the stage in front of about 2,500 high schools students as a few of the players were interviewed. The audience listened to them share their testimonies and how their faith plays into their experience with football. It was such an encouraging night and so refreshing to see these guys give God the glory for their successes.
Thursday was probably my most favorite day. In the morning I visited the USA Women’s and Children’s Hospital with the players, where we walked around and visited with some of the patients. Both of my visits to the hospital left me filled with joy. I don’t think the kids know how much of an impact they have on us! It was fun to see their faces light up as they met and interacted with me and the players. That night Megan and I went to Filippo Milone’s house for a culinary experience I will never forget. I really want to expand on this experience, so I will give it it’s own blog post right after this one. :) Make sure to read it!

Friday was the Senior Bowl Experience where fans got the opportunity to meet the players and get their autographs. Distinguished Young Women had a booth where I was able to also sign autographs for those attending the event. The next day was the game and it was so thrilling! Being my second non-high school football game, I was in awe at the level of excitement, participation and enthusiasm people in Alabama have for this sport. The tailgating was also unreal! During half-time, I was able to go down on the field because I was interviewed during the 2nd time out in the 3rd quarter. The South team won 20-10.
