Reality Check

By Jimmienell Morgan

This past week has been by far one of the most stressful weeks of my life. Between finals, figuring out my future and job searching, I’ve found myself in tears plenty of times. Wasn’t I supposed to know what I wanted to be by now? Wasn’t I supposed to have my future planned out? Wasn’t I supposed to be a big girl and not have to ask my parents for money ever again? So far these questions have been answered with a big, fat NO. I have no clue what I want to be, or what my future looks like, and money seems to slip through my fingers like sand these days. Sometimes I have to take a step back and give myself the reality check that growing up is hard, and not one person knows how their life is going to go.
Guess what? It’s okay for you to not to have it all figured out. The place where you’re “supposed to be by now” was created by the younger version of you. A you that didn’t know of the experiences and personal transformations that you would go through and how they would effect who you are today. Also, there will NEVER be a moment in your life when you feel like you have it all figured out. Your relationships, spirituality, personality, desires, etc. are constantly changing. Life is a learning process, and everyone is on the same journey.
I guess what truly matters in the here and now is who we are today. “You can only be who you are right now, in this moment, exactly where you’re at. There’s nothing more to know. If you’re feeling discontent, stressed out or depressed, it’s not because you should be or have something other than what you have right now. It’s because you’re beating yourself up about what you’re lacking, rather than focusing on creating joy, fulfillment, passion and purpose in your life.” This quote, written by Stephenie Zamora, really spoke to me. It reminds me that I don’t know what I am going to be like or want twenty years from now. I have to focus on the now, because that’s all I know. That’s all anyone knows. And that’s okay.
