By Nicole Renard Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2013
I hope this blog post finds you doing great! I’m so excited to be writing to you today. Thank you so much for checking out our blog! I recently got back from such a fun visit in Mobile, Alabama, the birthplace of Distinguished Young Women. It was my first time being back after National Finals and when I stepped off the plane I felt like I was back at home. Tropical Storm Karen had been sneaking up in the Gulf the morning of my flight out and I ended up having a four hour lay-over in Houston. But it was okay because my gate was right next to one of our sponsors “Blue Bell Creameries”, so I bought myself a big ice cream cone! I arrived at my dear host family’s house around one in the morning and started my next day at 5:30AM. Don’t be fooled; I would have slept in on any other normal weekend but Friday I had the wonderful opportunity of appearing as a guest on Studio10, a local morning show, where I even got to bake! So many dreams came true that morning as I was able to bake some of my fall festive brownies LIVE on the air all while talking about Distinguished Young Women! My dream is to host my own traveling cooking show one day, so this was a perfect precursor. After the show, I traveled to the National Headquarters for an orientation meeting with the new Communications Director and other fabulous Distinguished Young Women staff. Let me tell you, they are all very distinguished and deserve a big “HOORAY!” from everyone. They are awesome and make my job so much fun. Then I was off to Mary B. Austin Elementary School where I was able to deliver the “Be Your Best Self” message to all the fourth and fifth graders. These kids were so cute and I loved working with them. That evening was all about relaxation and fun as I attended Alabama’s largest music festival, Bay Fest, where I was able to meet “Love and Theft” and watch HUNTER HAYES perform for a beautiful 1 hour and 45 minutes. That boy has talent. The next morning we had a girls day. My host mom and sisters and I went shopping at the official clothing sponsor of Distinguished Young Women, Private Gallery, where they dressed me up in some adorable fall, fashion forward outfits for some of my appearances. I absolutely love that store and am so glad I get to work with them this year. I’ve been posting some pictures of my outfits on my Instagram and Twitter so check them out! Unfortunately the Distinguished Young Women Tennis Tournament Fundraiser was canceled on Sunday due to the weather so I ended up getting an early flight out of Mobile to make sure I didn’t get stuck in Alabama. It was so bittersweet leaving but I know I will be back soon. Now back to school and more adventures on the weekends! Let me know what I can do for you! Remember you are ALL distinguished and I love you so much! Stay tuned!
