Leaving The Nest

As a freshman at Ithaca College, I’ve had some time to reflect on the crazy, amazing time that is senior year. While the experience is different for everyone, these are some tips I definitely could’ve used last year- especially while I was most stressed out!

  1. Be present- During such a transformative time, it can be tempting to preoccupy yourself with the future; don’t do it! There are so many special moments during senior year, and you don’t want to have any regrets about missing out on them. Before you know it, you’ll be encountering many “lasts”, and you’ll thank yourself later if you appreciate them in the moment.
  1. Be positive- If there was ever a time to let go of negativity, this would be it. It can be tempting to feel sad about all the changes coming your way, but remember that high school is only meant to be a four year journey. Let go of the negativity in your life and enjoy the fun perks about being a senior! Make sure you surround yourself with the people you love, and do what makes you happiest. This is your last chance to do the things you’ve always wanted to do, so don’t let anything hold you back anymore.
  1. Work hard- You knew this one was coming! It can be tempting to give in to senioritis, but I promise it isn’t worth it. Spending the entire school year cramming in homework and studying at the last minute (if at all) adds way too much unnecessary stress. With college applications, senior trips, prom, and extracurricular activities, you’ll have plenty of more valid things to worry about. Do yourself a big favor and finish your academic career on a high note.
  1. Own your future- Whatever you choose to do after graduation, know that this is your future now. You don’t have to have everything figured out, but have faith in yourself. Everything will work out in the end, I promise. Just keep in mind, the decisions you make in these last few months of school can still impact you, so exercise caution. You didn’t work this hard just to lose it all in the final stretch!
  1. Relax and enjoy the ride! This is your last year before you’re a freshman again, so live it up! If you’re nervous about the future, just remember that your friends, family, and hometown will always be there for you regardless of what you choose to do after senior year. There’s an entire world waiting for you, so go out and embrace it.
