Name: Amy Liu
College: Princeton University
Major: Chemical Engineering
What is your favorite TV show? Friends. It’s just a classic, and I watched it with my Mom growing up. I never get tired of it, and I love how it’s so well-known that it can serve as common ground—even here in Brazil!
What is your favorite Olympic sport? Gymnastics (rhythmic and artistic!)
What is your favorite Christmas/holiday tradition? My family spends Christmas Eve and Christmas Day together and we have big family dinners, but we don’t open presents until after dinner on Christmas Day. It’s like having two Christmases every year.
What is your favorite quote? “Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, ‘It might have been.'” – Kurt Vonnegut
What is your favorite time of year? “the holidays” (December)
Plan ahead OR procrastinate? Plan ahead if it’s important, procrastinate if it’s not.
Paper OR plastic? Plastic. My family reuses them for various things.
Glass half-full OR glass half-empty? Half-full
Introvert OR extrovert? Introvert
Cats OR Dogs? Dogs (kittens and puppies are neck and neck, but dogs definitely win over cats)
Morning person OR night person? Night person
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you absolutely need for survival? Assuming that I’ve resigned myself to living on the island forever instead of trying to get back to civilization, a water filter, a knife, and my sister.
What would we find in your refrigerator right now? The refrigerators are shared, so one has all the leftover meal stuff and the other has everything from leftover cake to yogurt to stuff people forgot in there who-knows-how-long-ago (? of a mango, a slice of birthday flan, a cup of coffee complete with stirring spoon, the list goes on and on).
What is your biggest fear? Looking back and having big regrets.
What is the one thing you wish someone had told you about college life that you had to find out on your own? Don’t assume you know someone. I think when you’re meeting so many new people, you instinctively start to create these profiles for people in your head, based on other people you’ve known, from a few things they say or do. Subconsciously, you form expectations of them, and that can lead you to write them off prematurely, or just to have a narrow view of who they really are, which isn’t fair to either of you.
Sum yourself up in three words. Easy-going, thoughtful, sarcastic.
Describe your single-most favorite moment from your Distinguished Young Women experience. Definitely just hanging out with my host family. They are all such amazing people, and it was just all the little moments like when my host dad zig-zagged the car a little making my host sisters laugh, or when we all went out on a boat going to dinner, or when we got Hardee’s after the National Finals show. I feel really lucky to know them.
