7 Things All High School Girls Should Know

By Jimmienell Morgan
Distinguished Young Woman of New Mexico for 2013
#1. Do not make boys your priority.
This is #1 because I think it’s one of the most important lessons a girl should learn. Work hard on homework, not on getting a guy’s attention. Pay attention in class, not on the cute guy sitting behind you. Spend time with friends who love you, not on getting someone to love you. Ladies, boys at this age are like buses: if you miss one, there is another one coming around the corner.
#2. It’s okay to be single!
…. I think this fits as #2. Being single is not a crime, nor does it make you any less of a person. I really believe that you have to be comfortable being alone before you can really enjoy the presence of someone else.  Get to know who you are and what you want, before jumping into a relationship. It saves a lot of time and heartbreak.
After #1 and #2 I think I should let you know that yes, you will eventually meet a guy who makes your world spin. I’m not saying you should give up on guys; just don’t let them run your life!
#3. Invest in friendships not in popularity.
Being a girl in high school is hard when it comes to friends. Let’s be honest, girls are mean to each other. They are constantly looking for ways to burn one another. Where does this get us? Find friends who are kind and share similar morals. These relationships will carry you farther in life, than being “known” in high school.
Enough said.
#5. Save money.
Guess what? College is coming, and that means you will most likely become the stereotypical “poor college student”. (If you don’t, please teach me your ways). SAVE MONEY. You will thank me later.
#6. When you DO spend some of your money (don’t), spend it on experiences NOT material.
Trust me on this one. In twenty-years, would you rather be telling your children about the time you went parasailing or about that one Michael Kors purse you bought? Yeah, parasailing.
#7 Lastly, Spend time with your family.

Yes I know little sisters can be annoying, and parents can be demanding, but they are family. There will come a time when they won’t be a part of your daily life, enjoy them while they are. Remember to appreciate your mom’s cooking and your dad’s obnoxious singing at six in the morning. These are the things you will remember about them when they aren’t around, and you will actually miss them.
